How to run a traceroute in Mac OS X

The Trace Route command is a route-tracing tool used to display (and diagnose) the path (route) that an Internet Protocol (IP) packet takes from your computer to a specified destination. You may use this utility to identify and troubleshoot your networking related problems.

Here is how you can perform a traceroute on Mac OS X. Lets begin:

There are two methods:

Method 1 (Network Utility):

1-Launch Network Utility. You can access Network Utility:

  • (a) by searching with Spotlight. To do that simply press Command and Space then type Network Utility.

  • (b) by going to the CoreServices folder (/System/Library/CoreServices/Applications/). You may access this folder by going to Finder > Go > “Go to Folder…”.

2-Select Traceroute

3-Enter a domain name (ex. appletoolbox.com)

4-Click Trace. It may take a few minutes.
