The Trace Route command is a route-tracing tool used to display (and diagnose) the path (route) that an Internet Protocol (IP) packet takes from your computer to a specified destination. You may use this utility to identify and troubleshoot your networking related problems.
Here is how you can perform a traceroute on Mac OS X. Lets begin:
There are two methods:
Method 1 (Network Utility):
1-Launch Network Utility. You can access Network Utility:
- (a) by searching with Spotlight. To do that simply press Command and Space then type Network Utility.
- (b) by going to the CoreServices folder (/System/Library/CoreServices/Applications/). You may access this folder by going to Finder > Go > “Go to Folder…”.
2-Select Traceroute
3-Enter a domain name (ex. appletoolbox.com)
4-Click Trace. It may take a few minutes.
Method 2 (Terminal)
1-Launch Terminal (/Applications/Utilities). You may also use the Spotlight Search function. (see also: How to play arcade games in Terminal)
2-Enter the word traceroute, followed by a space, then the domain name for which you want to run a traceroute and then hit enter.
