In January 2014, Google launched the Open Automotive Alliance (OAA). Google stated that the OAA’s aim is to bring the Android platform to cars in 2014. Currently the OAA is supported by Audi, General Motors, Honda and Hyundai. Even though Mercedes Benz is not currently a partner in the OAA, Mercedes-Benz announced their support:
Mercedes-Benz will be the first German automotive manufacturer to bring Apple’s CarPlay infotainment system into cars. As soon as Google brings its own Android-based in-car infotainment system to market, Mercedes-Benz is planning to utilise the world of Android in their cars. As a result, and as already demonstrated two years ago when it presented the combination of the Drive Kit Plus and Digital DriveStyle App, Mercedes-Benz continues to be the leader when it comes to smartphone integration in vehicles. How the system operates in vehicles was demonstrated by Mercedes-Benz in a new C-Class at the Geneva Motor Show.
Mercedes-Benz further stated that:
We are constantly developing the connected car with the latest technologies available, so that every Mercedes-Benz driver can use their smartphone in the car in full comfort and safety.
The company has already said that it is working on “an after-market solution for previous cars,” to allow CarPlay in older models. Although it is not clear how Mercedes-Benz will integrate CarPlay and Android car systems. It is possible that buyers may have the option to select Mercedes-Benz models with either CarPlay or Android car systems.
