If you often find yourself watching videos in your web browser, you may want to check out Lights Off. This extension will dim your Mac’s screen around the video that you’re watching. This extension is recommended for Hulu, Netflix and YouTube junkies.
This tutorial requires a compatible web browser such Safari, Google Chrome or Firefox. Almost all major web browsers are supported. We will be using the Safari web browser. In this tutorial we will be showing you how to download, install and use Lights Off. Enjoy!
Downloading and Installing Lights Off
NOTE: For this tutorial, we will be using Safari. If you’re using safari, make sure that extensions are enabled. To do this go to the Safari Preferences window and click on the Extensions tab. Look towards the right-hand side of the window. You will see a slider that turns Extensions on. Make sure the slider is in the On position.
To start, launch your compatible web browser and navigate to the Lights Off Google Code page. Look towards the center of the window. You will see download buttons for all of the major web browsers that are supported by Lights Off. Download the version that works with your web browser.
Open the downloaded “.safariextz” file. A popup window will appear. This popup window will ask you if you would like to install the Lights Off extension. Click Install. The Lights Off extension will now install to Safari.
Using Lights Off
Navigate to an online video. We will be using YouTube for this tutorial. Once the video has loaded, look towards the left-hand side of the address bar. You will see a button that is shaped like a light bulb. When you click on this, everything in your browser will dim except the video.
