Wi-Fi syncing and backing up is made possible with the iOS 5 release. This feature allows you to wirelessly transfer your files (e.g. apps. books, calendars, photos, notes etc). If your iOS device (e.g iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPad, iPad 2, and iPod touch) support iOS 5, it will support Wi-Fi sync.
Requirements
- iTunes 10.5+. Download the latest version of iTunes here
- iOS 5
- Mac OS X or Windows (procedure is the same on both)
How to set up Wi-Fi Sync
- Connect your iOS device to your computer via a USB cable
- Launch iTunes and click on your iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch from the left side of the window
- In the summary tab, enable/checkmark “Sync with this iPhone (or iPad or iPod) over Wi-Fi”.
- Now pick up your device and navigate to; “Settings” and tap on “General”
- Tap on “iTunes Wi-Fi Sync”
- Select your computer to set up Wi-Fi syncing
- Tap on the “Sync” button to start the wireless syncing
How to use Wi-Fi sync
Once the set up is done, Wi-Fi sycing will be automatic if your device is plugged into a power source, iTunes is open on the computer and your device and the computer share the same Wi-Fi connection. You can also initiate a manual Wi-Fi syncing: Tap “Settings” > “General” > “iTunes Wi-Fi Sync” and tap on ‘Sync’.
Troubleshooting
If you are having problems with your Wi-Fi syncing, you may try the following:
- Make sure you have iOS 5 and the latest version of iTunes.
- Quit and reopen iTunes
- Restart your iOS device
- Make sure you have an active internet connection
- Make sure that your iOS device is connected to the same Wi-Fi network as your computer if you have multiple Wi-Fi networks.
- If you have a firewall, make sure that firewall is not blocking data transfer
