Recently, we at AppleToolBox noticed specific job postings that explicitly highlight Apple’s ongoing work as it pertains to biomedical devices. In particular, Apple is targeting the type of sensor technology that easily embeds into wearables and provides health information and insight to individuals, healthcare professionals, and medical institutions.

New Health Technologies Department


And Apple has set up its own Health Technologies Department, where a team is responsible for conceiving and proving out innovative new technologies for health, wellness and fitness sensors and other wearable technologies.


This new Biomedical position at Apple is responsible for developing hardware prototypes.


Develop prototype hardware for physiological measurement applications. Help design and execute small pilot studies using prototype hardware. Perform analysis of data collected, root-cause sources of error in measurements, implement improvements in hardware, measurement methods, or signal processing. Inform development direction related to product design, specification limits, and algorithm performance.”


The team is also hiring a biomedical studies engineer who is responsible for:


Design and execution of human user studies for providing reliable, revealing data for evaluating feasibility of health, wellness, and fitness sensors, systems, and applications. Develop and refine processes that streamline user study data collection process and improve the user study experience for participants.”


Apple is also beefing up biomedical lab talent by staffing up R&D lab technicians who’re responsible for instrumentation and support the overall prototype development. The ambition is high with a bunch of new projects, including updated Apple Watch sensors, more sophisticated fitness algorithms, personal medical record tracking and sharing, and even cardiac devices.


Summary


These new job postings at Apple suggest that the company is doing some interesting work in health and fitness. In May 2016, CEO Tim Cook spelled Apple’s investment out “We believe that health is something that is a huge problem in the world, and we think it is ripe for simplicity and a new view, and we’d like to contribute to that.”

So we shouldn’t be surprised to see some ambitious and forward thinking new hardware and innovations around health and fitness added to Apple Watch in the coming year. However, new devices that are classified as biomedical devices require FDA approval. We now know that Apple has been working with the FDA for some time now to explore new opportunities, diagnostic apps, and other health-related mobile tech.
