The biggest feature that comes with iOS 10.1 is primarily catered towards consumers with the iPhone 7 Plus devices. If you have the dual lens iPhone, the new iOS offers a feature to enhance “depth effects” in portrait mode.

Using iOS 10.1 on the iPhone 7 plus, you can switch your 2x telephoto lens in the portrait mode and click some very sharp professional looking pictures.

Apart from this new feature, the update comes with some bug fixes that have been plaguing some users related to connectivity problems and Bluetooth issues.

Security components have also been enhanced in iOS 10.1 along with bug fixes for Facetime and Contacts Apps. Based on the iOS 10.1 Release notes from Apple,

“Impact: An attacker in a privileged network position may be able to cause a relayed call to continue transmitting audio while appearing as if the call terminated

Description: User interface inconsistencies existed in the handling of relayed calls. These issues were addressed through improved FaceTime display logic.”

“Impact: An application may be able to maintain access to the Address Book after access is revoked in Settings

Description: An access control issue in the Address Book was addressed through improved file-link validation.”

The update also addresses slow Safari performance in idevices and an issue that some users were having that related to opening links from their mail. The issue around Search field missing in mail has also been addressed in this update.

If you used the Weather widget in iOS 10 and had constant issues with proper information showing up, the iOS 10.1 has been updated to resolve that issue.

The iOS 10.1 is supported on iPhone 5(c/s), iPhone 6 all models, iPhone SE and the newer iPhone 7 models. In terms of iPad, You can update it on your iPad mini(2/3/4), iPad Air(2), the iPad 4th generation and the iPad Pro models.

If you use the Health app on your iPhone and have encrypted iTunes back-up of your health data, it would be prudent to note that the iOS 10.1 update is behaving erratically with updating health data. Many users have had to revert back to iOS 10.0.2/3 in order to gain access to their health data. It may be a better idea to wait before you update to iOS 10.1 in this case.

In Summary, the new update does address a lot of bugs as well as performance improvements that were causing headaches for many users. Even if you don’t have the iPhone 7, and are running iOS 10 on an older device, we suggest that you learn more about iOS 10.1 and update your device if you were constantly having to deal with issues around connectivity, Bluetooth problems etc. after the original iOS 10 update.
