“Flappy Bird: New Season” gains popularity. Dong Nguyen says “It is not mine.”

Flappy Bird is a simple game, developed by Dong Nguyen. The game was released on May 24, 2013. It became so popular that it was bringing in as much as $50,000 a day. Then suddenly the developer removed the app from the app store because  it was too addictive. “It causes addiction (in) people. I think it is an unexpected problem … and I have to remove it.” said Dong Nguyen.  We reported earlier that many owners of iPhones with Flappy Bird installed listed their devices for sale demanding big money.

Creator Dong Nguyen said he would like to bring the game back but did not say when. A new app named “Flappy Bird: New Season” released on March 29, 2014, has recently gained a lot of popularity. The Guardian reported that the developer of this new game is making it look like Dong Nguyen released this game. For instance, a fake Twitter account claiming to be from Dong Nguyen has been tweeting about the app to promote it.

Further, the game appears to be an exact copy of the original Flappy Bird. And clearly the name suggests it is a squeal to the original game.

Is this new app the return of Flappy Bird? Most certainly not. This game was definitely not released by the original Flappy Bird developer. We reached out to Dong Nguyen and asked if this new game was developed and released by him. He told us that the app is not his app and certainly not a squeal to Flappy Bird. So this is just a shameless attempt at faking Flappy Bird.
