iOS update advice for iOS 7

In preparation for iOS 7’s impending public release on what’s rumoured to be September 10, I thought I’d share with you some simple upgrade advice. This is not only an additional solution to the battery draining issues that I previously covered here, but also a good procedure to try if you’re having any other issues with your device after updating to a new iOS.

The tip regards to how you install iOS 7. For some reason a direct install of iOS 7 from iOS 6 has been known to cause problems with some iPhones, including the battery drain issue previously mentioned. The solution is to first backup to iTunes, then run a completely fresh reinstall of iOS 6 from DFU mode. After this you can install iOS 7, and then restore your iPhone from the back up. It’s a bit of a pain to do it this way I know, but doing a fresh install like this from time to time is recommended anyway. It will tidy things up on you iPhone, and you should notice a performance increase if it was starting to feel a little sluggish, as mine was. I’ll run you through this process step-by-step.

1. First plug your iPhone into iTunes and perform a regular backup. Simply click – backup now.

2. Now you have to put your phone into DFU mode. First leave your iPhone plugged into iTunes via the USB cable. Then simply hold down both the home and sleep buttons until the Apple logo appears. As soon as you see the logo, release the sleep button, but continue holding down the home button. If done successfully, iTunes should popup a message saying that it’s found an iPhone in DFU mode. If you need additional help, you can go to Apple’s support page – http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1808

3. Now click ‘Restore’ and start a fresh install of the latest version of iOS 6.

4. From here you can install iOS 7

I’m not suggesting that this an all-encompassing solution to your iPhone/iPad problems, but it has been known to help, and could be considered a last resort upgrade option if all else fails. Some iPhone 4S users, like myself, were having additional battery drain issues where iPhone 5 users weren’t, and this has been known to fix this. Let us know if you had to do this and how it went in the comments.
