Adjusting Image Sizes – Preview

If you’re an avid social networker, you may know the pain of not being able to upload an image because of its file size. At AppleToolbox, we’ve found a quick and easy workaround that will let you easily resize images using the Preview application which comes preinstalled on every Mac.

In this tutorial we will be showing you how to easily resize images using the app Preview. This tutorial requires no additional software and can be used with OS X 10.5 or higher.

Resizing Images with Preview

To start, launch the Preview application on your Mac. Once it has completely launched, look towards the righthand side of the Apple Toolbar. You will see an option labeled “Tools”. Click on this button. When you do this, a drop down menu will appear.

Look towards the center of the drop down menu. You will see an option labeled “Adjust Size…”, Click on this option and a popup window will appear. From this popup window you will be able to adjust the size of your photo, thereby adjusting the size of the file. There are two ways to do this: using the presets, or making your own dimensions for the photo. We will be explaining how to utilize both of these options.

If you’d like to use the preset resize options, look towards the top of the Adjust Size window. Click on the option labeled “Fit into:”. When you do this, a drop down menu will appear. From this menu you can adjust the size of the image. The smaller you make your image, the lower the image size. Unfortunately, the image quality also decreases when the image size is decreased.

If you’d rather set your own image sizes, look towards the center of the window. You’ll see three different text boxes: Width, Height and Resolution. Change these settings to your liking.

Finally, look towards the bottom of the window. You will see a box labeled “Resulting Size”. In this box you will be able to view your image’s current size as well as the original size. When you’re finished resizing your image, press the OK button which is located towards the bottom righthand corner of the window.
