With the recent release of iOS 5, you may have heard of Apple’s new iOS-to-iOS messaging service called iMessages. This service allows anyone with an iOS device running iOS 5 to communicate with other iOS users for free. You can currently send SMS and MMS style messages with iMessage.
While iMessage is free, it takes a bit of work to set up. In this tutorial, we will be showing you how to activate iMessages on your iOS device. This tutorial requires an iOS device running iOS 5 and an Apple ID.
To start, open the Settings app on your device. Once the app has completely launched, look towards the left hand side of the screen. You will see a menu with a few different device options. Scroll down until you see Messages. Tap on this option.
Look towards the center of the screen. You will see a heading labeled iMessage. Next to this heading is a slider. Tap on this slider to turn iMessages on. When you do this, you will be prompted to log into your Apple account.
Now that you have logged in, you can now customize iMessages. For instance, you can choose which email account you would like to use to receive iMessages. You can change this by looking at the bottom of the iMessages options screen and tapping on the “Receive At” option. You can also toggle Send Read Receipts, which will allow others to be notified when you’ve read their iMessage. Lastly, you can choose to show the subject field.
To send iMessages, simply return to the home screen and launch the Messages app. From here you can send messages by tapping on the New Message button which is located on the upper half of the screen. When you receive a new message, you will receive a push-notification.
