Display Dim After Mac OS X 10.6.3 Update; Fixes

Several users have reported an issue in which displays, particularly external displays, are dim after the update to Mac OS X 10.6.3.

Apple Discussions poster KAdamsInCo writes:

“My Mac Mini was running just fine until I installed 10.6.3. After the reboot the display came up very dim. The icons and overall display are noticeably darker and playing a flash video (Hulu) results in an image that can barely be seen because it is nearly black. This is both with a direct DVI connection as well as through a DVI to VGA adapter. The same symptom is displayed on my ViewSonic monitor as well as my Sony HD TV (through the VGA port).”

Fixes

Disconnect, then reconnect display. This fix, albeit inconvenient, is the most widely successful. With your Mac on, simply disconnect your external display then reconnect it a few seconds later.

Adjust color profile. Follow these steps:

  1. Navigate to /Applications/Utilities/Color Sync Utility

  2. Select the Devices tab then go to Displays

  3. Choose your external display, then click the arrow next to “current profile

  4. “Choose “other,” then change the profile. Some users have reported success with choosing “Color LCD.”
